Things to do in Zagreb: Visiting the Museum of Broken Relationships
Zagreb has many quirky museums. We visited the Museum of Broken Relationships and would recommend it as an intriguing stop on any visit to Zagreb.
Where is it?
The Museum is located centrally in Zagreb’s old town, just down the street from the famous St Mark’s Church. It’s open from 9am-9pm (10pm during peak summer months) every day. We’d recommend visiting either early or late, as it’s a fairly small space and crowds would make it difficult to read all the information. We visited around 7:30pm and found this a good time. Entry was 7 euros.
What is it?
The Museum contains items donated by people from around the world, symbolising their broken relationships. Each item is accompanied by its story. The stories range from funny to sad to tragic to poignant, but each is unique. The relationships they describe aren’t just romantic either – they cover families and friendships too.
There is also a gift shop with some unique souvenirs and a café on site too.
How long to allow and who should visit?
We spent around an hour at the Museum. It isn’t large, but you’ll want to read all the stories. The stories are written in Croatian and English, and guides in other languages are also available.
The Museum is aimed at adults (or at the very least older teenagers) – there isn’t really anything there for kids to do and some of the themes covered by the stories are adult in nature. We would say this is a good stop on a visit to Zagreb – it’s certainly unique and we found a lot of the stories to be quite moving.
