Korcula – A complete guide to visiting the Lumbarda wineries
Many parts of Croatia are known for their wine. The Lumbarda area on the island of Korcula is no exception, specialising in Grk wine. We spent a half day visiting the area and recommend it as an enjoyable and relaxed way to spend time (and try some delicious wine).
Where is it?
The town of Lumbarda is located on the island of Korcula, off the Dalmatian coast. Korcula town is served by regular ferry services from Dubrovnik, Split and other islands. Lumbarda is located around 5km from Korcula town, and is surrounded by many wineries.
How to get to Lumbarda
There are a few ways to get to Lumbarda. Taxis are available, or there is a public bus that runs services leaving from the edge of Korcula town (check the timetable when you arrives). This costs around 2 euros per person each way.
Many people opt to hire bikes to ride to Lumbarda. It is a fairly easy ride all the way, with some of the ride on road and some on a dedicated pedestrian/cycle path. Bike hire starts from around 15-20 euro per bike.
We actually opted to walk to Lumbarda. It was an easy walk, with a small section along the side of the road and the rest on footpaths. We then caught the public bus home.
What’s in Lumbarda
Lumbarda itself is a small, pretty town on a harbour. There is a café/bar, a bakery and a couple of supermarkets/convenience stores. The main attraction are the numerous wineries that surround the town. We visited two, but you could visit a lot more. Be aware when planning a visit that many don’t open until later in the afternoon.
Our first stop was at the Winery Casa Boschi, which was a small winery just behind the town. We enjoyed sitting on the terrace with a view down to the water. The friendly owner talked us through a wine tasting of some of the local varieties, including grk and pošip. We then headed to Popić winery, which was a bigger winery. We again sampled grk and some local rose, enjoying the lively atmosphere and friendly service. Both wineries had food available, ranging from charcuterie platters to meals. We didn’t book, but if planning to eat a meal, it might be worth booking in advance especially at busy times of years.
We’d highly recommend a visit to Lumbarda for a relaxing day sampling wines and enjoying the laid-back atmosphere, with beautiful views over the rolling vineyards to the sea.
