Croatia accommodation recommendations

We stayed in Dubrovnik, Korcula, Hvar, Split and Zagreb. Here are some of our top tips for choosing and booking accommodation in Croatia.

Types of accommodation

Our favourite type of accommodation to stay in was apartments. Apartment facilities vary, but the places we stayed all had kitchen facilities, and some also had a washing machine. This meant we could cater some meals for ourselves. They were all centrally located within the old towns of the places we visited. We found all the hosts to be friendly, professional and the apartments to be clean and comfortable. In many cases the hosts even left gifts for us like cherry brandy, fruit and homemade biscuits!

If you want to be close to the old town, we’d recommend staying in apartments or smaller hotels (often described as ‘rooms’). Bigger hotels tend to be located further away from the city centre, but may have more facilities such as pools.

How we booked

We used websites like booking.com to compare properties and read reviews. I always like to check things like location (and proximity to key sites and transport options) and reviews for things like cleanliness and safety. If the accommodation we were considering also had an independent website, we’d compare prices for booking directly compared to booking through a third party website.

Other considerations

  • If travelling in the warmer months make sure your accommodation has air conditioning!

  • A lot of central accommodation in places like Dubrovnik and Hvar may be up steps. Similarly, some apartments may not be on the ground floor – this is worth being aware of if mobility is an issue (or you have lots of luggage!).

  • Consider what it’s important to you to be close to (for example, transport or key attractions).

  • If possible book in advance as this gives you the greatest choice of accommodation.

Our recommendations

These were the places we stayed and would recommend – all were booked via booking.com and we found communication with the hosts really easy.

  • Dubrovnik: Apartments Franka Old Town

  • Korcula: Apartments Rafaela

  • Hvar: Oleander Apartment & Room Centar

  • Split: Palace Inn Rooms

  • Zagreb: Bed & Breakfast Sky City Center
