Must eat food in Bosnia and Herzegovina

One of the highlights of our trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) was the food. We found it to be delicious, fresh and reasonably priced. Here are some of our recommendations for must-eat dishes:

Cevapi

Available throughout BiH, cevapi are small sausages made out of minced meat (usually lamb or beef). Served with fresh bread and onions, they are delicious and cheap!

Burek

Also available pretty much everywhere from bakeries to restaurants, this is a pastry that comes with a variety of fillings. This can include meat, potato, cheese or spinach. It can come served with yoghurt on the side, and you generally pay by weight.

Uštipci

These are doughnut-like fried balls, that we ate as a savoury food. Often served with soft cheese.

Stuffed peppers/capsicums

These were delicious – basically pepper skins stuffed with a mixture of meat, rice and onion. We ate them throughout BiH.

Bey's Soup (Begova Čorba)

A super fresh and hearty soup made with chicken, okra and a variety of vegetables. Everywhere we went had their own version of this soup.

Salads and roast vegetables

These deserve their own entry! We found the vegetables in BiH to be super fresh and full of flavour. We ordered chicken salads and also enjoyed tomato salads as an accompaniment to more meat-heavy dishes. We also ate some of the best roast vegetables we’ve ever had.

Cheeses

Cheese in BiH is truly excellent and there are many different regional varieties. One of our favourites was Travnik cheese, made from sheep’s milk.

Bread

There are a huge variety of bread and bread-based products – we enjoyed sampling whatever was on offer in the local bakery.

Sweet treats

Some of the sweet treats we enjoyed were baklava (perfect as a side to Bosnian coffee!), Bosnian delight (don’t make the mistake of calling it Turkish delight!) and smokvara (fig cake – yum!).
