Everything you need to know about Kravice Waterfalls

Our favourite place to swim in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) was the Kravice waterfalls. This is a beautiful and refreshing stop on any trip to BiH, and one we would highly recommend!

Where is it?

The waterfalls are located in the Herzegovina region of BiH, around 40km south of Mostar and not far from the border with Croatia. This makes it a popular spot with day trippers – both from Mostar and those venturing from Dubrovnik in Croatia.

How to get there

The easiest way to get there is either by driving (there is a large car park) or on a bus tour. We visited as part of a multi-day tour of BiH. We’d recommend getting there early in the day to get ahead of any crowds (and the day tours arriving from Dubrovnik). We visited in September, arriving around 10am and it wasn’t too busy.

Cost

There is a fee to enter. At the time of writing (September 2023) this is up to 20 BAM per person, depending on the season.

Getting down to the falls

Getting down to the waterfalls from the entrance requires walking down a number of steps and sloping roadway. For those with mobility issues or who’d prefer not to walk, there was a shuttle providing transport (this would be an additional cost).

Swimming

The falls comprise of one large swimming area, which leads up to the base of the waterfalls. The water was quite cold at first (we swam on a hot – approximately 27 degrees Celsius) day in September, but once we got in we found it refreshing. The banks aren’t steep, but are rocky, so swimming shoes or sandals can be a good idea to keep your feet comfortable!

The water is initially shallow, but gets quite deep the further you swim out. The water was also quite still without any current when we visited This makes it suitable for different levels of swimming ability, and children would be able to paddle in the shallow water. Please note there are no lifeguards or supervision.

There are changing shelters located behind the bars and cafes – these are very basic. There is also a toilet block a short walk from the bars and cafes.

Bars/cafes

Surrounding the waterfalls and swimming area are numerous bars/cafes/restaurants. These are a great place to grab a drink, something to eat or just people watch. We recommend (as in much of BiH) bringing cash with you. When we visited, there was an ATM near the entry (above the falls). There are also a couple of outlets selling souvenirs and ice cream.

How long should you spend at Kravice waterfalls?

This is up to you! The area around the falls is fairly small, so you don’t need long to see it. However, you could definitely spend a few hours or longer relaxing beside the water and swimming.
